Lhasa De Sela has distinguished herself as a singer and storyteller with her debut album, La Llorona. The 25-year-old Montreal resident, who grew up traveling through Mexico while living on a school bus, sings of her tortured heart with the accompaniment of guitarist-producer-arranger Yves Desrosiers and a cabaret-style band. Already compared to those of Edith Piaf and Billie Holiday, De Sela's haunting voice is memorable on each of the 11 songs (only 3 are nonoriginal) that range in inspiration from Mexican ranchera to Eastern European klezmer. --Cristina Del Sesto
Reviewer: World Music Fan This is my favorite Miriam Makeba CD. It has a jazzy sound and is very upbeat. Miriam was my introduction into African Pop and I am so excited that I discovered it! African music is my favorite music and this CD is one that is near the top of my list! I've recommended this to people and everyone that has purchased it, loves it!
Groovy low down sound. #8220;Graham's voice evokes PJ Harvey without mimicry... showcased nicely amongst the turntables, B-3's and clavinets…It'll sweep you up like the fall wind.#8221; - The Weekly Dig .
Susanna has this ease about her on stage. Her presence is comfortable and she makes you feel that way too. Her voice is indescribable. It's as smooth as butter or maybe more like butter-cream.
...Extremely soulful songs...a blend of jazz, folk, acoustic..beautiful lyrics... featuring the best musicians in Australia. Perfect with a glass of wine in front of the fire.
'Holt's guitar cries, screams, and laughs....Steaming guitars, church-like organs and barrelhouse piano carry Holt's vocals and call-and-response choruses with the entire band....Their sound is thick and rich, almost smoky, a mix of Austin blues, Delta blues, and country twang.' - Chip Walton, Lagniappe
The music on Hendrick Scott's debut unveils his unique balance of freedom and control as he proves his position as part of an elite group of young new york-based improvisers and composers impacting jazz around the globe.
Jazz piano trio. The sound is natural, clean and spacious. Our music, though based in the traditions of jazz piano trio, has a breathing, conversant quality where interaction rather than role playing is emphasized.
